Cabarrus County - NC Real Estate
Early Beginnings

The original settlers of Cabarrus County were Germans on the east and Scotch-Irish on the west. The area was originally part of Mecklenburg County, and then in 1792 it was divided. Tradition states that the reason for creating a separate county was because of the language barrier between the German and the Scotch-Irish residents. The name came from the Speaker of the House of Commons at the time, Stephen Cabarrus. He cast the deciding vote that allowed the county to separate from Mecklenburg. Concord is the county seat of the county.

Historical Importance

Cabarrus County is best known as being the first place in the United States where gold was discovered. In 1799 a twelve-year-old boy named Conrad Reed discovered a nugget of gold as large as a brick. Not knowing what it was, the family used the large yellow rock as a doorstop, until a jeweler identified it and bought it for just $3.50. This sparked one of the biggest mining operations ever to exist in the Carolinas, the Reed Gold Mine. This discovery caused a miniature gold rush that spread throughout the south. This mine yielded more than 100 pounds of these large nuggets, and operated successfully until 1912. Today it is a tourist attraction that is open for guided tours.

Cabarrus County and its residents have long been known for their fierce patriotism. Throughout history they have answered the call to arms for most of the major battles our country faced. Even today, many soldiers come from the young men and women who call Cabarrus County home.
