Iredell County
Early Beginnings

Iredell County was originally settled by Scotch-Irish and German settlers who migrated to the region from nearby Pennsylvania. The land was fertile and there were many animals to hunt in the region, so they chose to make their new homes there. The county was formed in 1788 from land that had once been part of Rowan County. It was named for the man who was North Carolina’s attorney general at the time, Judge James Iredell. He was monumental in organizing and promoting the Constitutional Convention that was successful in rejecting the Articles of the Confederation and creating a new Constitution for the young country. Statesville was chosen as the county seat.

Historical Importance

Iredell County is famous for Fort Dobbs, which was constructed in the area in 1755 to protect the early settlers. This fort gained fame because Daniel Boone and his family once stayed within its confines, and today it is open for tours. Iredell County also has a Navy ship named after it, the USS Iredell County (LST-839). This ship was built and used in World War II. It was part of the historic Okinawa battle, shuttling troops among the staging areas in the eastern part of the war. The ship was also commissioned to transport troops and equipment during the Vietnam War.
