Early Beginnings The first residents of modern Union County in North Carolina were the members of the Waxhaw Tribe. The land was incredibly fertile, and this agricultural society was thriving in the area until 1741, when a smallpox epidemic killed many of them, leaving the survivors scattered amongst other tribes. This opened the land for colonists who wanted to take advantage of its lush beauty and fertile soil. They came starting in 1750 from places such as Germany, Wales, Scotland, and England. This settlement continued at a steady rate until the Revolutionary War. The residents of what would become Union County participated in the war, sending soldiers and supplies to the colonial army. After the war, more and more settlers flocked to this region. The area became its own political entity on December 19, 1842. Prior to becoming Union County, this land had been split between Anson and Mecklenburg Counties. The county seat, Monroe, was chosen a year later. Historical Importance Prior to the Civil War, most people living in the southern parts of the county were farmers or worked in agriculture in some fashion. When the demand for cotton decreased after the Civil War, Union County suffered. World War II helped revive the economy of Union County as residents began to manufacture products for soldiers. Monroe was the home of much controversy during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Robert F. Williams called the county seat home. He was famous for defending two black boys who where were arrested because they had been accused of kissing a white girl. He took steps to help the African-American community learn to defend themselves against the violence that was targeted at them during this turbulent era. Things to See and Do While Charlotte is just a short drive from most of the towns in Union County, there is plenty to see and do without venturing far from a home here. There are eight excellent golf courses in and around Union County for those who enjoy hitting the green from time to time. Children will enjoy playing in the water at Cane Creek Park, a 1,050-acre park that provides boating, fishing, and swimming opportunities for all who visit. This is just one of the many places in Union County where residents can enjoy the beauty of the nature of North Carolina. Union County Real Estate News Union County has sometimes been given the nickname of “The Good Neighbor to Charlotte.” The towns in the county, and Monroe in particular, are close enough to Charlotte to provide an easy commute to the city and the many jobs that are found there. Since 1990, Union County has grown at a rate of 23%, and this growth is expected to increase. Since I-485 and Highway 74 are nearby, it is easy to get to and from Union County. Those who move here can enjoy many amenities, including Monroe’s Aquatic Center and public library. Also, the area schools provide excellent education, and many new schools have been recently added to the school district.
