Weddington is primarily a residential area with only 16 acres of land zoned for business. It is one of the wealthiest towns in the state, having the highest per capita income of any town in the region. Once a rural town, Weddington is now considered the suburban Charlotte, being home to large subdivisions and horse farms. The real estate market of Weddington is booming because more and more newcomers move to the town looking for a quiet atmosphere, but with access to the amenities of Charlotte within a short commute away.
The Town of Weddington made history around 1760 with the migration of Northerners of European decent. When Reuben Boswell from Virginia donated four acres of land to the Sandy Ridge Methodist Episcopal Church in 1824, the community evolved into a progressive town. When Boswell’s grandson named Reuben Boswell Weddington was born, he continued his grandfather’s legacy and the church honored his family by renaming it as “Weddington Methodist Church” in 1899. The town took its name from the church in 1983.
